The purpose of the chakras or energy centers is to awaken the mind, body, and spirit, from the earth (root chakra) to the heavens (crown chakra). This February, the month of love, I present Anahata, or the Heart Chakra. The heart chakra is symbolized by a lotus flower with twelve petals and relates to the color green. One of my favorite heart chakra poses is Ustrasana or Camel Pose. This pose stimulates the thymus gland, heart, lower lungs, skin, hands and circulatory system and expands the ribs. Find a quiet place, turn on some chakra yoga music, clear your mind, relax your body, and enjoy. Don't forget to breathe while visualizing the color green and breathe out while vocalizing this chakra's mantra sound YAM. *Disclaimer: This cool down pose is to be done after warming up the body through a series of warm-up poses. My Dear Friends, We've had to deal with another tough and complicated year because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Certainly, what seems like an unending nightmare! I'm praying that you have a happy and safe new year. For this 2022 year, I will pray nightly for the miraculous healing and end to this COVID-19 pandemic. Will you pray too? Blessings to you.
Literally, the images above are yoga poses with a chair or two; however, this goes against my teachings. If you've taken any of my classes (private or group), you'll recall my words, "Listen to your body. Only go as far as it feels comfortable for you." So, play it safe! Do not attempt the exercises above. Yoga is over 5,000 years old. It’s one of the oldest ongoing systems of personal development. It’s believed that around 200 B.C.E. a wise man named Patanjali gathered core principals of yogic philosophy known as the Yoga Sutras. He is considered the father of yoga. Chair yoga was developed in 1982 by Lakshmi Voelker-Binder after seeing that one of her students, only in her thirties, was unable to do floor poses because of her arthritis. Chair yoga allows EVERY person to take advantage of the physical and psychological benefits of yoga. Using a chair as a prop allows individuals with hesitancy, tightness, balance problems, stiffness, injuries, physical disabilities, and so forth, to practice yoga with security and confidence. This provides encouragement, a reduction of pain or discomfort, and support for the body. Chairs also assist one in finding the proper pose with correct alignment and safety. The use of this prop is also useful for added height for forward movements, for balance, and to assist one in getting down to and back up from the floor. Below, I've provided 5 most beneficial chair yoga poses. They are safe enough to do every day to help detoxify, stretch, and provide burst of daily energy. And if you want to improve your health and wellbeing and are searching for a yoga teacher who will create a safe, customized chair yoga practice just for you, then search no more! “Sava” means corpse. “Asana” means pose. Put the two together and you get Savasana, which translates to Corpse Pose. And how fitting to honor this pose on this Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead; Day of the Corpse. In this yoga pose, the objective is to remain motionless for some time and keep the mind still while being fully conscious. This allows us to learn to relax. This conscious relaxation invigorates and refreshes the body and the mind. This so called “easy posture” is actually one of the most difficult to master as it requires keeping the body still. However, the benefit is great as it:
So, take the time today and always to end your yoga sessions with Savasana. And, especially on this Dia de los Muertos, seize the moment, while in your time of tranquility and restoration, to lovingly remember those who are no longer physically on this earth. Namaste.
Do you know what a chakra is? Do you know the seven main chakras? Do you know the locations, seed sounds, colors, etc.? A chakra is a spinning vortex of activity created by the presence of consciousness within the physical body. The seed words above represent the seven chakras or energy centers in the body that take energy from the outside, process that energy internally, and express it back out again. The seventh chakra is represented above as the thousand-petal lotus flower (the crown). It has no seed sound, as silence is the most important way to open this chakra. The seven major chakra locations correspond to the seven central nerve ganglia branching out from the spinal column. Each of these nerve bundles influences the energy body as well as the physical body, matching the structure of the nervous system. The word "chakra" comes from Sanskrit meaning wheel or disk, as the chakras are commonly referred to as spinning wheels of energy; wheels of light. I have begun offering a morning and an evening chakra practice (listed in my Class Descriptions page). The morning practice contains seven variations on the flowing yoga sequence which is known as Sun Salutations or Surya Namaskar. It is designed to stimulate each of your seven chakras, beginning from the root chakra up to the crown chakra. The evening practice is to bring your energy down from the crown chakra to the root chakra. It is designed for relaxation and preparation for a good night's sleep. You'll learn each chakra's locations, colors, seed words, words of affirmation, and specific poses for each of the chakras. I'd love to hear from you with any questions, thoughts, or comments.
